London-born Rue Kothari has built considerable local knowledge over 15 years living in the UAE. Rue combines regional insight with a passion for design and an extensive knowledge and experience of the global design industry.
With a background in international consumer publishing, she launched Harper’s Bazaar Interiors magazine as Editor in Chief, raising it to become a key consumer title, and conceiving and establishing their Design Awards.
Since taking over as Director of Downtown Design in 2015, she has established the event as the leading design fair in the Middle East, growing its footprint, brand and influence year on year. Her role as a key figure in the regional design industry continues to involve advising international brands on the regional market opportunity and supporting the growth of local design businesses.
She launched Editions in 2018, the region’s first showcase for limited edition design, bringing together diverse talents from around the world, and shining a spotlight on designers working in the Middle East. As an active mentor of emerging design talent, she has helped fledgling brands to curate their collections, craft their business strategy and gain crucial awareness with local and international press.
Rue continues to be a vocal advocate of the regional design industry, commentating in various international publications and speaking at global events, to help educate and enlighten the global audience on the growth potential of the ME design industry.
Her proven expertise at taking a young business idea and helping it to thrive is at the heart of her success.
Now based between London and Dubai, she is active in international markets, with a strong network in cities including Paris, Milan, Delhi, New York and Singapore, helping designers and brands extend their influence and opportunities beyond borders.
Rue is an expert at nurturing emerging designers, helping them to reach their potential.
As a vocal advocate of the regional design scene, she arose as an eminent commentator on design, advocating for emerging local talent, writing for international design titles, speaking on design.
